Templeman lifts the level

Sitting behind the wheel of his Series 6 RX-7, right foot hard up the throttle is where top New Zealand drift competitor, Daynom Templeman, is at home. When the decision to build a car to compete overseas was on the drawing board, it wasn’t a tough choice picking what it’d be, a rota fan through and through the choice was obvious.

Over the past four months, Daynom and the Daynom.com team have been piecing together the project (ZM002). The brief was simple – take everything they’d learned from their first foray into drifting (ZM001) and take it to the next level. Well, let’s just make that three or four levels.

Starting with a fresh RX-7 chassis, the Series 6 was stripped bare, seam welded and then fitted with an extensive cage. While the current competition car wears a 13B, ZM002 has been fitted with a 20B triple rotor and mammoth Master Power turbo. To ensure that Daynom won’t experience gearbox failures while overseas, a 6-speed Holinger sequential transmission has been sourced and fitted.

Progress on the new RX-7 has been coming along nicely, and in fact a matter of weeks the RX-7 will have sat on the dyno, spun out nigh on four-digit power readings and be ready to shred tarmac. Unfortunately for the teams New Zealand fans ZM 002 is not destined to compete in this country, it has been purpose built to compete at an international level, the first round of competition will be in Jakarta in September followed by Thailand in November and Malaysia in December.
