Storming drive brings top finish for van Gisbergen

SBRShaneVGRnd1R2Podium_3.jpg
A storming drive from the seventh row of the grid netted SP Tools-backed Stone Brothers Racing Ford driver Shane van Gisbergen third place both in the second race of the weekend and the round at the second round of the 2010 V8 Supercar series at the Bahrain International Circuit early this morning (NZ time).

Building on his results from the first day of competition, when he qualified fourth, joined defending series champion Jamie Whincup on the front row of the grid after setting the second quickest lap time in the Top 10 Shootout then finished fifth in the first race, the 20-year-old came back from a 14th place qualifying performance for the second 200 km race of the weekend this morning by working his way up to eighth place by the time he made his first pit stop (on lap 10) then fourth and eventually third after his second stop on lap 26.

Along the way he claimed his second new category lap record in as many weekends, with the only lap time under the 2.07 barrier.

For the second time in the weekend the race was won by Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup from Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom with (this time) van Gisbergen third.

Whincup and Winterbottom also finished first and second respectively in the Saturday race with Craig Lowndes third, Garth Tander fourth and van Gisbergen fifth.

Having also scored two wins from two starts at the first round of the 2010 series at Abu Dhabi last weekend Whincup leads the series points standings heading to the third round back in Australia in a fortnight (the Clipsal 500 meeting in Adelaide) with a perfect score of 600 points. Winterbottom is second with 543 and after being fourth after the first round van Gisbergen is now third with 471 points.
