Fourth GM1 taking the grid

1973 McRae GM1 #008 - Cars of the MSC Tasman Revival Series*

The fourth McRae GM1 that we profile is the #008 chassis belonging to Peter and Aaron Burson.  Remembering that only fourteen McRae GM1's were produced, and four of these have entered to compete in the 2009/10 MSC Tasman Revival F5000 Series in New Zealand and Australia.

The #008 GM1 chassis had extensive competition in the 1973 United States F5000 championship.  It was built for Cuddy Racing and driven by Jon Woodner in nine rounds of the series, which was won by Jody Scheckter (Lola T330).

His best result was fifth at Road Atlanta in August 1973 with four DNFs (did not finish).

The subsequent history is slightly vague.  As Woodner drove a Talon MR 1 in the 1974 season the GM1 was advertised and sold at the end of 1973.

However the #008 chassis was bought by Dan Furey in 1981 from Graham McRae and raced in the historics in the 1990s by the next owner Paul Hoey (1995-2008).   How it got back into Graham McRae's ownership is not known.

Next it was sold to Jay Esterer who raced the chassis in the 2009 MSC Tasman Revival F5000 Series and on sold it to the Burson family (who also own the #003 chassis).  This McRae GM1 chassis is one of four that will line up for this weekends Lady Wigram Trophy meeting at Ruapuna, Christchurch.
